Hue is one of the main cultural, religious and educational centers of Vietnam. So far, Hue remains to be the only originally historical vestige city in Vietnam. Many of Hue’s attractions are found along the banks of the romantically named Perfume River with 11km length. This valuable construction includes more than 100 architectural works, which are the reflection of the life of Emperors and mandarins under Nguyen’s reign. Architecture in Hue is the combination of royal architect, folk, religious ones, traditional and modern sides. On December 11th, 1993, it was classified by UNESCO as the world cultural heritage. On the north bank of the river is the Imperial Citadel, built along the line of Peking’s Forbidden City, enclosed by 10-metre thick walls and surrounded by a moat. A few kilometers further up the river are perhaps Hue’s best-known religious site. Inside the citadel, there are still wonders. For example, the seat of the Nguyen emperors occupying a large, walled area on the north side of the river. Inside the citadel was a forbidden city where only the concubines, emperors, and those close enough to them were granted access, the punishment for trespassing was death penalty. We also ride to visit to the tombs of ancient Kings. Situated in the middle of the hills on the Southern bank of Perfume River are very beautiful tombs of Nguyen Kings. Among these tombs are the four famous ones with the name and the arrangements of the tomb reflecting each Emperor’s points of view, personality, and tastes. This is majestic Gia Long tomb, imposing Minh Mang tomb, poetic Tu Duc tomb and magnificent Khai Dinh tomb. Bicycle Advice

Suitable Bicycle. MTB, Touring Bike, Cyclocross/Gravel bike.

At JET we hold firmly to the opinion that using your own bike, the bike on which you feel at home and comfortable is the finest way to enjoy a cycling adventure.

Most kinds of bicycle, except light-weight racing bikes are suitable for this tour: touring bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids or cyclocross bikes are all fine. Road conditions vary from asphalt to gravel and some hard packed dirt tracks. Tyre’s from 35mm in width upwards will be fine but we recommend 40mm on 700c and 2” on 26” wheels as a minimum.

South East Asia is generally a warm place so the ability to carry one or two water bottles is essential (either on your bike or in a backpack). Our back-up vehicle carries water and tools although for those competent with tools bringing your own pump, puncture kit, and multi took is recommended as it would speed up repairs and minor adjustments. If bringing your own bike please bring along a few spare spokes that fit your wheels (please note that different wheels have different size spokes). If your bike has disk brakes or hub gears please bring any components that you feel may be necessary. We carry some spares for our hire bikes but we cannot guarantee that we will have any tubes other than 26” car type valves. Tyres and tubes other than 26” can be difficult to come by in many parts of the world so please make sure you have spares. If in doubt please ask at your local bike shop. A means of carrying your camera, sunblock etc is also useful – either an on-bike bag, handlebar or saddlebag for example, or a lightweight day-pack.

Recommendation: Although our hire bikes come equipped with a saddle if you have a saddle you use and are happy with it is strongly recommended that you use it on tour. If you use SPD type shoes please bring your own matching pedals. We are happy to fit these for you. You may also like to bring bar ends if you use them at home.

ESSENTIAL! Please be sure that your bicycle is in perfect condition before you leave home. Again, if in doubt please consult your local bike shop.

    Rental Bicycles

If you wish to hire a bicycle for the duration of your holiday with us we can arrange for the hire of good quality cycles from our in-country agent. We had a wonderful holiday in Vietnam with your Tour “Hanoi to Saigon”. We found the tour well balanced which allowed us to cycle through spectacular rural scenery and to experience the adventure of dealing with the urban traffic in the major cities. To experience the culture and learn of the history of Vietnam from the grass roots perspective on a bicycle was truly an experience that we will never forget. It is difficult to name a section of the tour that stands out because it was the whole experience put together that was special. The 24hrs sailing on Halong Bay was amazing, the experience of Dalat and the Central Highlands was great and the coastal areas had their own touch of beauty. The accommodation provided was of a very high standard and better than expected. The food provided certainly provided us with a broad taste of the local cuisine. We wanted to make special mention of Tuyen who was a fantastic guide and certainly showed his obvious experience . He not only had an extensive knowledge of the local customs and history but he also displayed excellent people skills and always had the interest and the safety of those of us on his tour foremost in his thoughts. From the moment he met us at the airport, we felt comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed all the days we had with him as our guide! All Drivers were excellent in the provision of their services to the tour. Dzung, we also felt privileged to have you on the tour with us. We appreciated your assistance (particularly Tuyen who benefited from your help when climbing the mountains!) and your attention to detail in making sure all of our needs were being met throughout the tour. Over all, we congratulate you on the excellent tour services that you provide and we hope that our circumstances in the future will allow us the opportunity to take part in one of your other tours. Best Wishes Warren & Kym Hubner
